Negative Effects of Chemical Based Lawn Fertilizers

Most people spend a lot of time, money, and effort to ensure their lawns look impeccable. There are innumerable products for sale that can help people achieve this lush, green lawn that so many desire, but people should be aware that many of those products are riddled with dangerous chemicals and are derived from oil and natural gas. The usage of chemically based lawn fertilizers has many negatives that impact the environment both locally and globally.

While these chemicals might help create the perfect looking lawn, they can have seriously detrimental side effects. The first major downfall of these chemical fertilizers is the effect they have on streams, rivers, and oceans. Putting these chemicals on a lawn doesn’t mean everything becomes instantly absorbed. If there is rain resulting in runoff from your lawn of any kind, that chemically tainted water can reach storm drains. From there, it infects larger sources of water. This is no small matter because artificial chemicals can potentially throw off delicate underwater ecosystems and cause dead-zones. Dead-zones are created by rapid bacterial growth that is fueled by chemical fertilizers. As unnaturally large bacteria colonies form, they deplete oxygen levels that make these water areas uninhabitable by fish and other animal life.

There are also harmful effects of these chemical fertilizers that are more immediate and close to home. If there is a pet (or neighbor’s pet) that has access to the chemically treated lawn, that animal can get extremely sick from ingesting these fertilizers. The same can be said of small children. Some people choose to rope off the affected area for a day before letting animals and children back on the lawn, but this is only half of a solution at best. With something as important as the health and safety of children and animals, no risks should be taken. As a conscientious homeowner, a person has the responsibility of finding safe ways to make a home look presentable. As such, forego the harsh chemical fertilizers, and consult other neighbors, friends, and the internet to find effective means of eco-conscious gardening. It might take a bit of extra effort up front to find the right product, but in the long run, it will pay off when the health of all parties is guaranteed.

Just because there are serious downsides to harsh chemical fertilizers doesn’t mean people can’t achieve the desired look for their lawns. BR Green’s organic lawn care program solves this problem of chemical fertilizers by creating healthy soil through liquefied compost fertilizers that are completely Earth, Pet, and People friendly. We allow you to eliminate chemicals from your lawn while creating a more beautiful, lush lawn.
