Whether you are starting a garden for the first time or are a seasoned gardener, your main goal is to grow large healthy fruits, vegetables or flowers. Both flower gardens and vegetable gardens require their own unique combination of soil, water, sun and fertilizer to properly thrive. It takes diligence and commitment to create and maintain a beautiful and productive garden, but all the hard work is well worth it. With the right care, there will come a day when you can finally pick bouquets of flowers to brighten your home, and use homegrown vegetables as fresh healthy ingredients in your meals. With proper fertilization, any garden plants can grow large and healthy and produce amazing flower blooms and crisp delicious vegetables. One of the more recent innovations in garden fertilizing is organic compost tea, which is bagged, aged compost steeped in water for an extended period of time, usually a minimum of two weeks. Organic compost tea can be made from your own compost pile or it can be purchased from a store or online retailer. Once the “tea” has been properly steeped it can be used as food for the roots to encourage growth. Organic compost tea can also be diluted and used in a sprayer bottle on the leaves and foliage of the plants to provide helpful bacteria and deter pests.

Controlling outdoor pests is best accomplished before they hatch, rather than taking care of the problem when you have an infestation during the spring and summer months. Beneficial nematodes are used as a tool for organic pest control. Nematodes are microscopic, worm-like creatures that feed on the eggs and larvae of common insects that mature in the soil throughout the year. Typically, they infect insects in their larval or pupal state, but have even been shown to infect adult insects. Once the nematodes have become a parasite to their chosen host, they release toxic bacterium the kills the bug within 48 hours. If of the host does not occur, the insect is usually rendered sterile and disabled.

Beneficial nematodes are naturally occurring and can be used anywhere that pests exist such as homes, businesses, and farms. They are safe for people, pets, and plants. Nematodes can be applied on a schedule to prevent infestations or for pest removal after an infestation has occurred. If they are applied after an infestation, it should be reduced after a few days. For as much open space and urban concrete there is in this country, an enormous amount of area is taken up by lawns. Homeowners maintain millions of acres of grass, and primarily do so by using chemical-based fertilizers, insecticides, and weed killers. These treatments can harm our children, pets, beneficial spiders and insects, and can be carried to additional locations through any number of methods.

These harsh chemicals are also harmful to the soil, which more than just your lawn relies on as a hospitable habitat, a safe environment and a hardy supply of nutrients. The lawn chemicals kill important microbes that live in the soil. They’re very beneficial to the roots and the area around them by breaking down dead plant matter and animal refuse. Taking advantage of natural lawn treatments eliminates the negative impact of chemicals while preserving their original purpose. Continue reading “Why You Should Use Organic Products On Your Lawn” »
